Today is the one-year anniversary of the forced withdrawal of Al Shabaab from fixed points in Mogadishu. A push by troops of the Transitional Federal Government and the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) ended the extremist groups stranglehold on the capital and its population. Over the past 12 months, residents of Mogadishu have enjoyed the longest period of relative peace in their city for 20 years. A semblance of normal daily life is returning to the now busy streets as businesses and neighbourhoods begin to rebuild.
